A village with heart and tradition

Dorfgastein is a tranquille village. The popular rural character of the village with lovely customs, a touch of alpine romance and coziness has been well preserved without being any less modern. Whoever says “Dorf” (village) instead of Dorfgastein, surely is an original “Gasteiner”.

To the north of Dorfgastein lies Mayerhofen, and across west to the Gastein Ache river lies Unterberg. Discover Luggau, the oldest village in our region, that lies to the south of Dorfgastein.

Burgruine Klammstein (castle ruin Klammstein)
The castle Klammstein, the region’s oldest historical structure, lies at the entry of the Gastein Valley, 60 meters above the access road on the Klammstein (850 m of altitude). It is here where the settlement of the Gastein Valley once started - numerous prehistoric finds bear witness to that. Until the 16th century, the castle was also the administration center for the mines as well as the region’s jurisdiction.

Naturhöhle Entrische Kirche (natural cave)
This show cave in Klammstein is the largest natural cave in the Salzburg central alpine mountains and one of the most significant caves of the Hohen Tauern transition zone. The cave, nominated for the European Union’s protection area network “Natura 2000”, is also considered a “place of energy” because of the high amount of positive earth radiation. Entry is only possible as part of a guided tour.

Pfarrkirche Dorfgastein (Parrish church Dorfgastein)
The church is an early Gothic building from the year 1350. Old was turned into new - during the restoration of the church careful forces were at work: the historically valuable high altar was put back together again with its original pieces.

Römerturm (Roman tower)
Famous landmark of Dorfgastein from the year 1340. In the town center, right by the Hotel Römerhof, the orphaned tower that once was one of the oldest taverns in the Gastein Valley, can be found.
